Sportsbooks Add Elections – To Sports Betting Lines Menus by Luken Karel

There are three (possibly four) more opportunities.

Snyder based his prediction on the fact that Dewey wore a mustache and his belief that women would find that the facial hair made Dewey look ?sneaky.?

Many sportsbooks have a m88bc betting line on whether the Democrats will gain control of the Senate (?No? still is favored over ?Yes?) while some enterprising wagering outlets have betting lines on many of the individual races. While it?s looking increasingly likely that Democrats will hold all their seats (New Jersey is a problem), as well as pick up seats in Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Rhode Island, getting to six will be difficult. With an unpopular war in Iraq, low approval numbers for President Bush, and a series of scandals plaguing the Republican Party, most books have the Democrats favored to take over the House.

The Senate, where Democrats need six seats to regain a majority, is another matter. What it all means is while some citizens will cast their votes at the ballot box, others will express their opinions with cold hard cash.

At least that?s the way the story goes.

Posting betting lines and/or betting on the outcome of presidential elections are not new. McCain, because of his maverick nature, has appeal with moderates, swing voters and conservative Democrats. 7.

How many Senate seats will the Democrats gain in the 2006 election?

It was just hours after George W. Others still offer index wagering on how many Senate seats the Democrats will gain.

Recognizing that the 2008 election may be a bit too distant for most bettors, many sportsbooks have posted betting lines in this year?s midterm election, Nov. The practices gained attention in 1948 when legendary oddsmaker and gambler Jimmy ?The Greek? Snyder predicted that heavy underdog Harry S. Democrats need to pick up 15 seats to wrest control of the 435-seat body from Republicans for the first time since 1994. That would be a formidable foe in the general election but, ironically, that same independent streak?-he strayed from conservative orthodoxy on judges, taxes and gay rights–could hurt him in the GOP nomination process where Evangelical Christians and conservative activists, groups less than enamored with his stance on those issues, are a formidable voting block, particularly in the primaries.

A series of gaffes have made Senator George Allen (R) vulnerable to the challenge of former Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb (D) in Virginia while in Arizona, Jim Pederson (D) is attempting to come from behind to beat Senator John Kyl (R), the author of the recently passed ban on Internet wagering.. Truman, who had been elevated to the presidency when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, would beat GOP standard-bearer and heavy favorite James Dewey, the Governor of New York.

An index wager might look like this:

Clinton has the opposite problem. While the former First Lady is wildly popular in Democratic circles and, should she decide to run, would be difficult to beat for the party?s nomination, remains a polarizing figure and could have difficulty winning a general election where many already have a fixed, negative opinion of her.

The most prominent betting line asks bettors to wager whether the Democrats will regain control of the House of Representatives. Claire McCaskill (D) is running neck-and-neck with Senator Jim Talent (R) in Missouri, where stem cell research (she supports it, he doesn?t) is a big issue while Harold Ford (D) is trying to prove that an African American can win in Tennessee, where Bob Corker is trying to hold the seat for Republicans.

That said, most betting lines still favor a McCain-Clinton showdown in 2008, although juicy, double-digit prices abound for other hopefuls such as former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani (R), Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R), former Vice President Al Gore (D), Indiana Senator Evan Bayh (D), Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (D), former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D), Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R), retired General Wesley Clark (D) and Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D).

Truman did prevail at the ballot box, famously holding up a newspaper whose headline erroneously proclaimed Dewey the winner.

In addition to races for the Presidency, the Senate and the House, some sportsbooks also have betting lines on several Governor contests. Bush had been re-elected President of the United States in 2004 that sportsbooks began posting betting lines on who would win a four-year lease on the Oval Office in 2008.

John McCain, the Arizona Senator, and Hilary Clinton, the Senator from New York, remain the frontrunners for the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively

Sports Betting: Playing football parlay cards for fun and profit – Las Vegas Sports Betting

Not only must your chosen teams win, but they must also beat the spread. They offer the potential for a big payoff from a very small wager. Can you see why parlays are so popular?

During your next trip to Las Vegas, put your NCAA and NFL football handicapping skills to the test and play a $2.00 – 10 team ‘ties win’ parlay card at your favorite casino for a chance to win $1,200 (or more).. As a recreational gambler you are playing parlay cards for fun and risking small amounts of money that you can afford to lose. Watch for payouts shown as 10-for-1 as opposed to 10-to-1. ties lose.

Look for $2.00 minimums. Good Luck!

What are point spread parlays?

Parlay cards offered by most Las Vegas casinos and sportsbooks are point spread parlays. A parlay is a collection of two or more teams (sides) or events (over/under) that you place a wager on and ALL must win in order for you to win. So why not combine the two for twice the fun and excitement?

3 teams 6-1 (read as 6-TO-1)

4 teams 10-1

5 teams 20-1

6 teams 40-1

7 teams 75-1

8 teams 150-1

9 teams 300-1

10 teams 600-1

Using this table, a sports bettor making a wager on a five-team parlay would win $20 for every $1 bet if all of the games or totals win. A $10 parlay winner at 10-for-1 odds would receive $100, while at 10-to-1 the payout would be $110.

Look for ties win vs. For a beginner’s guide to football betting and an introduction to totals and point spreads read this article: How to place your first football bet at a Las Vegas sportsbook like a pro .

What is a parlay?

Parlays are an extremely popular type of sports bet. Not to mention adding an additional level of excitement to the weekend’s college and NFL games. One loss is all it takes for you to lose.

Parlay payouts vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, but typical Las Vegas parlay cards involving point spreads and totals are similar to these:

Investigation Finds Global Betting Scam Fixed Hundreds Of Matches

Three Pakistani international cricketers were jailed in Britain in 2011 for their part in a scam where players agree to rig a specific part of a game, so-called “spot fixing”.

Singapore police said last month that they were helping Italian authorities to investigate alleged soccer match fixing involving a Singaporean, but said he had not been arrested or charged with any offence there.

German investigators said international matches were implicated as were games in Turkey, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Bosnia, Slovenia and Canada. “The Hungarian member, who was immediately below the Singapore head, was in touch with Hungarian referees who could then attempt to swing matches at which they officiated around the world,” he said.

(Reuters) – Hundreds of soccer matches have been fixed in a global betting scam run from Singapore, police said on Monday, in a blow to the image of the world’s most popular sport and a multi-billion dollar industry.

Austrian prosecutors are investigating 20 people, including players, on suspicion of fraud and money laundering linked to fixing and betting on soccer matches, a spokesman for prosecutors in the city of Graz said.

“The support of law enforcement bodies, legal investigations, and ultimately tougher sanctions are required, as currently there is low risk and high gain potential for the fixers,” said Mutschke, a German former police officer.

The world’s most popular sport, soccer is played on every continent. About 380 of the suspicious matches were played in Europe, and a further 300 were identified in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

($1 = 0.7301 euros)

Investigators said no names of players or clubs would be released while the investigation proceeded. The World Cup and Europe’s Champions League are beamed worldwide and generate billions of dollars for national associations, clubs and broadcasters.

SINGAPORE CONNECTION

Corruption linked to Asian betting syndicates and organized crime has long been seen as a threat to the game, but Monday’s announcement underlines the scale of the problem.

Soccer has been affected by bribery scandals in the past, with the English game suffering in the 1960s and Italian soccer hit by a series of fixing cases in recent years.

Last year the head of an anti-corruption watchdog estimated that $1 trillion was gambled on sport each year – or $3 billion a day – with most coming from Asia and wagered on soccer matches.

About 680 suspicious matches including qualifying games for the World Cup and European Championships, and the Champions League for top European club sides, have been identified in an inquiry by European police forces, the European anti-crime agency Europol, and national prosecutors.

(Reporting By Thomas Escritt; Editing by Janet McBride, David Stamp and Giles Elgood, Martin Howell)

Investigators described how gang members immediately subordinate to the Singapore-based leader of a worldwide network were each tasked with maintaining contacts with corrupt players and officials in their parts of the world.

“This is a sad day for European football,” said Rob Wainwright, director of Europol. Those responsible for running the games should hear the warnings.”

“As part of the fight against the manipulation of matches, UEFA is already cooperating with the authorities on these serious matters as part of its zero tolerance policy towards match-fixing in our sport,” it added.

England’s Football Association said it was not aware of any “credible reports into suspicious Champions League fixtures in England.”

“We have evidence for 150 of these cases, and the operations were run out of Singapore with bribes of up to 100,000 euros paid per match,” said Friedhelm Althans, chief investigator for police in the German city of Bochum.

Althans said that while German police had concrete proof of 8 million euros ($11 million) in gambling profits from the match fixing, this was probably the tip of the iceberg.

TIP OF THE ICEBERG

Fourteen people have already been convicted in Germany in connection with the investigation.

Accomplices would then place bets on the internet or by phone with bookmakers in Asia, where bets that would be illegal in Europe were accepted. Suspicious games had also been identified in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Laszlo Angeli, a Hungarian prosecutor, gave an example of how the scam worked. “This is now an integrity issue for football. Ralf Mutschke, Director of Security for world soccer’s governing body FIFA, said sports bodies and prosecutors needed to work more closely together.

Corruption goes beyond soccer. “One fixed match might involve up to 50 suspects in 10 countries on separate continents,” said Althans.

“Even two World Cup qualification matches in Africa, and one in Central America, are under suspicion,” Althans added.

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, said it expected to receive further information from Europol in the coming days.

The growth of televised sport and technology that allows gamblers to bet during a match have created fresh opportunities for fraudsters with links to organized crime.

A German investigator described a network involving couriers ferrying bribes around the world, paying off players and referees in the fixing which involved about 425 corrupt officials, players and serious criminals in 15 countries.

The matches in question were played between 2008 and 2011, the investigators said. However, the fixing also included top flight national league matches in several European countries, as well as two Champions League matches, including one played in Britain.

Hacking by China not necessarily a “hostile act” – CNN Security Clearance

infrastructure, it would not necessarily be a “hostile act.”

But Dempsey told the Senate Armed Services Committee where he was testifying that he cannot attribute the Chinese hacking to China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Dempsey replied.

Graham noted he was about to lunch with the Vice President of China who is in the U.S. top military officer said should China’s military be found to be behind hacks into the U.S. Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he “believe(s) someone in China is hacking into our systems and stealing technology and intellectual property which at this point is a crime.”

Sandia drops nuclear warhead … in the name of safety

The second test was conducted in July at Sandia’s 85-foot Drop Tower Facility. In the first test, the Critical Radar Arming and Fuzing Test (CRAFT), an unarmed W88 was launched in June by a Trident II missile from an Ohio-class nuclear submarine with the goal of seeing how the radar operated at hypersonic re-entry speeds, which generate ionized plasma that can interfere with radar.

The United States hasn’t fielded a new nuclear weapon since 1988 and its deterrent arsenal is the oldest in the world. Its purpose was to see if the warhead could remain safe after a fall similar to one that might occur during a loading or shipping accident. With a yield of 475 kilotons, it’s designed to be small enough for as many as 14 to be fitted in a MIRV configuration atop a Trident II missile, though only eight are carried on each launcher under the terms of the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty.

The purpose of the tests was to determine how well the modifications to the warhead work, as well as gathering data for computer modeling for further updates and simulations of various accident scenarios. The shock and vibration data will be used to update its design specifications for later modifications and to simulate other accidents that might occur, but have not been tested in real life.

Sandia and its partners are currently evaluating the results from both sets of tests, though the company says that the radar functioned as expected.

Source: Sandia. As part of the US government’s Life Extension Program (LEP) for its nuclear arsenal, the inert W88 ALT 370 warhead was dropped from a crane in New Mexico onto a slab of concrete to test the updated design’s safety.

The W88 is one of the United State’s primary nuclear weapons. As part of this effort, Sandia carried out a series of tests this year on the W88′s radar arming and fusing system, as well as drop tests to simulate a loading accident involving the warhead.

Sandia says that this is the first drop test conducted on a W88 warhead since 1988. In order to ensure that the current inventory of warheads remain safe and effective for another 20 to 30 years, the National Nuclear Security Administration is carrying out a program of inspecting, refurbishing, and updating the stockpile. In real life, there would be no chance of a nuclear explosion, and the warhead would not be expected to function afterward, but there is concern that radioactive or toxic materials might be exposed should the warhead’s casing crack.

Dropping a nuclear warhead may not seem like a particularly bright idea, but earlier this year Sandia National Laboratories did just that

Are ‘Mini-Nukes’ The New Big Thing?

spent more in real terms on atomic defense activities than since 1962.

Strategy — In its Nuclear Posture Review last year, the administration identified Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, North Korea as countries where “contingencies” could arise that U.S.

At the same time, however, last month the United States produced a plutonium pit — the core of a fission bomb — for the first time in 14 years. Other efforts include developing lasers and computers to simulate aspects of nuclear tests.

Nuclear Stockpiles: President Bush has agreed to dramatic reductions in the number of nuclear weapons in the U.S. A bomb of just one kiloton, detonated 30 meters below the earth, can open a crater wider than a football field, according to Princeton physicist Robert W. “Unless we do a lot more research and development and we find some quantum breakthrough in conventional systems, to go deep is going to require a nuclear capability.”

Last year, the U.S. But some experts contend that no bomb of any size could go very deep, because the heavier the bomb, the harder the impact — and the harder the impact, the more likely the bomb would explode before it reached sufficient depth.

Testing — The U.S. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, asked recently.

“Nuclear weapons have a unique ability to destroy both agent containers and (Chemical and Biological Weapons),” reads a 2001 Pentagon study.

Defense officials said in 2002 that at present, the U.S could go from the decision to test to a trial run in two to three years. arsenal, the submarine-launched Mk-5 holds eight W88 warheads of 475 kilotons each.

But the administration says smaller nuclear arms may eventually be needed to deal with the emerging threat of rogue states hoarding weapons of mass destruction.

A memo obtained by a British newspaper indicates that at a conference this summer, Defense and Energy department officials will consider questions like: “What is the uncertainty in confidence and potential risk threshold for a test recommendation–what would demand a test?”

“How can we effectively seek to dissuade others from developing nuclear weapons while we are going forward with the development of new nuclear weapons ourselves?” Sen.

However, the administration is paying increasing attention to the possibility that it might at some point have to resume testing if there were a question about the reliability of the nation’s stockpile. “If you were to have a problem with a weapon system that you needed to rectify using a test, you would want to be able to do that faster,” J. arsenal. According to Sen. has signed but not ratified — the administration says it has no plans to conduct a test. wants to stop proliferation.

The ban — named after sponsors Elizabeth Furse, D-Ore., retired, and John Spratt, D-S.C. — did not prohibit designing a testing device with a yield below five kilotons, modifying an existing weapon for safety reasons or conducting research and development necessary “to address proliferation concerns.”

The Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima delivered around 15 kilotons. According to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the move “restores the nation’s ability to make nuclear weapons,” and was needed so the Energy Department could replace pits found unsafe or destroyed through regular check-ups.

But some members of Congress believe conventional weapons could do the same job, and worry that mini-nukes would blur the line between conventional and nuclear weapons. Duncan Hunter, R.-Calif., last May. Crouch, the assistant secretary of Defense for International Security Policy, said in a briefing last year.

Copyright 2003 CBS. Edward Kennedy, the administration has budgeted $700 million for studying how testing might resume. In the modern U.S. “nuclear strike capabilities” must be geared towards, according to a leaked copy of the report.

The 1993 low-yield ban that the current defense bill would delete stated that “it shall be the policy of the United States not to conduct research and development which could lead to the production by the United States of a new low-yield nuclear weapon, including a precision low-yield warhead.”

Announcing its approval of the bill Friday, the Senate Armed Services committee stressed that nothing in the repeal means it has authorized “the testing, acquisition, or deployment of a low-yield nuclear weapon.”

CBSNews.com’s Jarrett Murphy takes a look at the prospects for the U.S. Last May, he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to slash their active arsenals by nearly two-thirds, to 1700 to 2200 warheads each, within 10 years. Two had been recovered and three were still missing as of 5 p.m. D. Nelson.

The move to clear the legal hurdles on manufacturing mini-nukes is part of a broad review of U.S. Others contend that making more bombs is a bad idea if the U.S. development of low-yield nuclear weapons.

The Bush administration may get permission to create kinder, gentler or at least smaller nuclear weapons if Congress overturns a ban on doing so.

The defense appropriations bill now winding its way through the Hill contains a clause revoking the 1993 Spratt-Furse amendment, which prohibits the development of so-called “low-yield” nuclear weapons – bombs that pack a punch of less than five kilotons.

The Foster Panel, which studied the testing issue last year, recommended improvements that would allow a test within three months to a year of deciding to do so. policy on nuclear weapons, which has included:

Bunker busters — For the second year in a row, the Energy Department is requesting $15 million to study the need for a Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP).

Supporters say these weapons might be necessary to deal with so-called “hard and deeply buried targets” in rogue states and terrorist camps, of which there might be 10,000 in the world.

“One way you ensure that there are no safe havens is to be able to go deep,” said Armed Services Committee chairman Rep. Sandia drops nuclear warhead … in the name of safety

Sandia says that this is the first drop test conducted on a W88 warhead since 1988. With a yield of 475 kilotons, it’s designed to be small enough for as many as 14 to be fitted in a MIRV configuration atop a Trident II missile, though only eight are carried on each launcher under the terms of the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty.

The United States hasn’t fielded a new nuclear weapon since 1988 and its deterrent arsenal is the oldest in the world. As part of the US government’s Life Extension Program (LEP) for its nuclear arsenal, the inert W88 ALT 370 warhead was dropped from a crane in New Mexico onto a slab of concrete to test the updated design’s safety.

Sandia and its partners are currently evaluating the results from both sets of tests, though the company says that the radar functioned as expected.. As part of this effort, Sandia carried out a series of tests this year on the W88′s radar arming and fusing system, as well as drop tests to simulate a loading accident involving the warhead.

The purpose of the tests was to determine how well the modifications to the warhead work, as well as gathering data for computer modeling for further updates and simulations of various accident scenarios.

The second test was conducted in July at Sandia’s 85-foot Drop Tower Facility. Its purpose was to see if the warhead could remain safe after a fall similar to one that might occur during a loading or shipping accident. The shock and vibration data will be used to update its design specifications for later modifications and to simulate other accidents that might occur, but have not been tested in real life.

Dropping a nuclear warhead may not seem like a particularly bright idea, but earlier this year Sandia National Laboratories did just that.
